Autumn lawn care for Parklands homes

Freshly weeded garden bed beside a Christchurch home

Autumn in Parklands is deceptively gentle — mild days, soft rain, and lawns that suddenly look their best after summer. It is also the season that sets up everything for winter, and an hour or two of attention now saves real trouble in July. Here is what matters most on a typical Christchurch section.

First, stay on top of leaves. A light scatter is harmless, but thick mats of fallen leaves smother the grass and invite fungal problems in damp weather. Mowing over light leaf fall chops it into mulch that feeds the lawn; heavy drops are better raked up and removed. Either way, do not let them sit for weeks — the wet mat underneath is where winter damage starts.

Second, keep mowing while the grass grows. Autumn growth is steady rather than frantic, so a cut every two or three weeks keeps things tidy and stops the lawn going into winter long and straggly. Long grass flops over in frosts and holds moisture against the soil surface all winter. A clean, medium cut in late May is the ideal farewell.

Third, weed now while it is easy. Autumn weeds pull readily from damp soil, and every dandelion or twitch crown removed now is dozens fewer seeds next spring. A pass through the beds and along the path edges pairs perfectly with the last mows of the season — which is exactly the combination our tidy-up visits cover.

Finally, ease off and let the lawn rest. Winter lawns in Canterbury need very little: stay off frosty grass, skip mowing in the coldest weeks, and save the big projects for spring.
