How often should you mow your lawn in Christchurch?

There is no single right answer, because Canterbury lawns grow at wildly different speeds through the year. In the flush of spring — September through November — a sunny Parklands lawn with decent soil can put on astonishing growth. Mowing every week, or even every ten days, keeps it level and stops the grass from getting ahead of the mower. Little and often is the golden rule: taking a small amount off the top each time keeps the lawn dense and discourages weeds from muscling in.

Summer brings a different pattern. Nor'westers and dry spells slow growth dramatically, and mowing too short in hot weather stresses the grass. Raising the cut height a notch and stretching the interval to two or three weeks suits most Christchurch lawns from December through February, especially if you are not watering. The lawn may brown off in patches during a dry spell — that is normal dormancy, not death, and it greens up again with autumn rain.

Autumn is recovery season. Growth picks up again as temperatures cool and rain returns, so a fortnightly cut through March and April tidies fallen leaves into the bargain and leaves the lawn clean going into winter. Winter itself is a rest: from June to August most lawns barely grow, and mowing once a month — or skipping it entirely in a cold snap — is plenty. Avoid mowing frosty or waterlogged grass.

The honest shortcut? Watch the lawn, not the calendar. If it looks shaggy, cut it. And if keeping up feels like a chore, that is what a regular round is for — call 027 310 5515 and we will keep your Parklands lawn on schedule all year.
